HOW I MET MY FATHER (Prt. 1)

I grew up without a father. It was just mummy, my little sister and I. I am 2 years older than my little sister.

Mummy had always refused telling us about daddy. She’d get really angry whenever we asked and one time, she beat us mercilessly.

Mummy had a friend who always came over to see her. Most times, he’d come when she isn’t around. No, I wouldn’t call him mummy’s friend because mummy was always angry whenever he visited. I don’t know why. They always locked themselves up in mummy’s room and argued.

On one of the days when he visited in mummy’s absence, my little sister was playing with her friends outside.

Uncle Moore came into my room where I stayed to do my homework. He brought gifts. Plenty chocolate bars, my favorite snack. I snacked on them happily and then…

He raped me!

I tried to tell mummy when she got back home from work but she was too angry to listen to me. I really tried. God knows I tried to tell mummy.

Days grew into weeks and weeks grew into months, uncle Moore kept coming and raped me every single time.

I begged mummy to take me to daddy. I wanted to leave but mummy wouldn’t listen.

Suddenly, uncle Moore stopped coming. I don’t know why but I was happy.

Well, tragedy struck again. Mummy fell sick and in two days, she died.

I was just 8. Little sister was 6.

Aunty Martha, mummy’s big sister came for us. We lived with her.

One day, I opened up. I told aunty Martha about what uncle Moore did to me. She cried. She promised to take me and my little sister to daddy. She said daddy would protect us.

We were happy. Who wouldn’t? Finally, we would meet and live with daddy.

The day came, she took us there.

We ran in happily. Jumped on the sofas. I mean, daddy has the kind of beautiful house we only see in movies.

Daddy came out to welcome us.

“Anita Moore Akpan” he called me.

No way! The M in my name stands for Moore?
